Create, reset, or remove your Roku PIN

How to create, reset, or remove your Roku PIN

What is a Roku PIN?

A Roku® PIN (personal identification number) is a four-digit code that allows you to authorize who can make purchases and add apps on your Roku streaming device. It can also be used as a parental controls feature to keep children from watching certain kinds of content on The Roku Channel. Using the Roku PIN is optional, but it's a good idea if you're not the only person who uses your Roku streaming devices.

How to access your PIN preferences

Use the following instructions to create or reset your Roku PIN:

  1. Sign in to your Roku account
  2. Under PIN Preference, select Update
  3. To set up a PIN, select Create a PIN
  4. To reset an existing Roku PIN, select Change PIN

How to set controls for purchases and adding apps

The PIN allows you to control what can be purchased and what apps can be added to your Roku streaming device. Note that the PIN controls apply only to subscriptions purchased directly through Roku or The Roku Channel.

  1. Sign in to your Roku account
  2. Under PIN preference, select Update
  3. Choose your PIN preferences for making purchases and adding apps
    • Require a PIN to make purchases and add apps

    • A PIN is not required to make any purchases or add any apps
  4. Select Save preferences

How to set Parental Controls for The Roku Channel

Parental Controls allows you to limit what content your family can watch on The Roku Channel by requiring a PIN for certain kinds of content. Parental Controls settings do not apply to apps outside of The Roku Channel (such as individual apps, like Netflix or Hulu), and they do not prevent users from accessing content elsewhere (such as a provider's website or mobile app).

Once you access your PIN preferences, follow the steps below to set a parental controls PIN:

  1. Go to Parental Controls for The Roku Channel and select any of the following:
    • Off: All content, including unrated content, can be watched without a PIN
    • G, TV-Y, TV-G: Only movies/TV shows rated G, TV-Y, and TV-G are allowed
    • PG, TV-PG: All movies/TV shows rated PG/TV-PG and below are allowed
    • PG-13 and TV-14: All movies/TV shows rated PG-13/TV-PG and below are allowed
  2. Select Save preferences

How to remove the PIN from your Roku account

If you decide you no longer need a PIN, you can remove it using the following instructions.

  1. Sign in to your Roku account
  2. Under PIN preference, select Update
  3. Go to Making purchases and adding apps and select A PIN is not required to make any purchases or add any apps
  4. Go to Parental Controls for The Roku Channel and select Off
  5. Select Save preferences

After your PIN preferences are saved, a PIN is no longer required on any of your Roku devices when making purchases, adding apps, or playing content on The Roku Channel.
