How to reduce motion blur in fast-moving scenes on your Roku TV™
Motion blur is a visual effect most noticeable in action scenes or sports programs caused by the blurring or streaking of fast-moving objects. If you notice motion blur in the program you are watching, you can use Action Smoothing on your Roku TV to minimize the visual effect.
- Note: Not all Roku TV models support Action Smoothing. Refer to the manufacturer of your Roku TV for details.
How Action Smoothing works
The Action Smoothing feature reduces motion blur by applying a certain degree of smoothing to the original video signal. The amount of reduction depends on the setting you choose for Action Smoothing.
- Off: Action Smoothing is turned off. The original video signal remains unchanged.
Low: Results in a slight reduction of motion blur.
Medium: Results in a moderate reduction of motion blur.
High: Results in a significant reduction of motion blur.
How to use Action Smoothing
On Roku TV models that support Action Smoothing, the feature is available in the Advanced picture settings submenu of the Options menu.
- During playback, press Star
on your Roku TV remote to open the Options menu - Scroll and select Advanced picture settings
- Modify the Action Smoothing selection using the left and right buttons on the directional pad on your Roku TV remote. The directional pad is plus-shaped and is in the center of the remote.
- Note: If Action Smoothing is not listed in the Advanced picture settings submenu, then your Roku TV does not support the feature.
More about Action Smoothing
- While a higher Action Smoothing setting results in the greatest reduction of motion blur, it can introduce other undesirable side effects, such as the disappearance of small objects. In these cases, you should use a lower setting or turn Action Smoothing off.
- Action Smoothing settings are unique and persistent for every input, and for each type of content (e.g., 1080p, 4K, 4K HDR). For example, if you have a 4K Blu-ray™ player connected to HDMI 1, you can assign a different Action Smoothing setting for 1080p movies, 4K movies, and 4K HDR movies. Each time you return to HDMI 1 to watch a movie, the Action Smoothing setting automatically returns to the assigned value depending on the type of content being watched.
- Action Smoothing is Off and disabled when Game mode is On for any of the HDMI or AV inputs.
