Turn off your TV with a sleep timer

How to use a sleep timer to turn off your Roku TV™

Whether streaming content over the internet, watching an "over-the-air" program on the Live TV input, or viewing an external device (e.g., cable set-top box, game console, Blu-ray player), you can use a sleep timer to power off the screen on your Roku TV after a designated amount of time. You can even switch to a different source and start watching something else. When the time finally arrives, the sleep timer will remember to automatically power off the TV screen, letting you fall asleep worry-free.

  • Note: Only one sleep timer can be active at any time, but it can be modified or canceled using instructions described in this article.

How to set a sleep timer

You can set a sleep timer on your Roku TV in one of four different ways. Before you start watching a program, you can set a sleep timer from the Settings menu or use the shortcut tile at the bottom of the channel grid (on your Home screen). When you are actively streaming content, watching the Live TV input, or viewing an external device, you can set a sleep timer from the Options menu or you can use a voice command. Each method is described below in more detail.

  • Settings menu

    1. Press Home home button on Roku remote on your Roku remote
    2. Scroll and select Settings
    3. Select System
    4. Select Time
    5. Select Sleep timer
    6. Choose a time interval (30 minutes, 1 hour, 1.5 hours, 2 hours, 3 hours)

To modify an existing sleep timer, repeat the steps above and select a different time interval, or cancel the sleep timer.

    Shortcut tile

The 'Sleep Timer' shortcut is a unique tile at the bottom of the channel grid on your Home screen that provides an easy and convenient way for you to set a sleep timer on your Roku TV. Using the shortcut tile saves you from having to perform a more complex or time-consuming series of steps.

    1. Press Home home button on Roku remote on your Roku remote
    2. Move right or select Home to open the channel grid
    3. Scroll up or down to find the 'Sleep Timer' shortcut tile
      • Tip: All shortcut tiles are permanently located at the bottom of the channel grid. When at the top of the grid, the fastest way to the bottom is to simply scroll up. If you do not see the 'Sleep Timer' shortcut tile, visit the Settings menu and make sure it has not been hidden.
    4. Select the 'Sleep Timer' shortcut tile
    5. Follow the on-screen instructions to create a new sleep timer, or modify an existing one

    Options menu

When streaming music, a movie, or TV show, or when watching content from an external device connected to your Roku TV (e.g., cable set-top box, game console, Blu-ray player), you can access the Options menu by pressing Star star button on Roku remote on your Roku remote. Once you see the Options menu, scroll up or down to Sleep timer and select a time interval.

    • Note: In some streaming channels, Star star button on Roku remote is assigned a different function meaning it will not open the Options menu. In these cases, you need to use another method to set a sleep timer.

To modify an existing sleep timer, return to the Options menu and choose a different time interval, or cancel the sleep timer.

    Voice command

Speaking naturally to a Roku voice remote or the free Roku mobile app for iOS® and Android, you can use a voice command to set a sleep timer on your Roku TV. Simply press and hold the Voice button microphone icon on Roku mobile app on your Roku voice remote or tap the same icon on the Roku mobile app, and then say your voice command.

You can specify a time interval:

    • "turn off TV in 30 minutes"
    • "set sleep timer for an hour"

    Or a specific time:

    • "turn off TV at 11 PM"
    • "set sleep timer for 1:30 AM"
