Now, the Live TV Zone will include rows of Live TV channels and entertainment from content providers like Fubo, DirectTV, and Sling when users have a subscription to these streaming channels.
Live TV Channel Guide Updates: The Live TV Channel Guide on The Roku Channel lets users browse and discover 400+ live TV streaming channels. With this update, the Live TV Channel Guide is getting more personalized, more visual, and even more convenient.

Our latest update introduces enhancements to the music playlist experience to give customers greater ease and control, as well as offer more ways to discover music they love. A new details page for the playlist gives users a quick view of videos within the playlist, allowing them to easily shuffle, skip ahead, and add their favorite playlists to their Save List. Once a playlist concludes, it will auto-play into another one for seamless listening. Additionally, the playlist will appear within their Continue Watching row for easy access to jump back in.
Roku Photo Streams Integration with Google Photos: Roku Photo Streams makes it easy for users to personalize their screensavers, turning the biggest screens in their home into a digital photo frame. Now, through an integration with Google Photos, users can set albums from Google Photos as screensavers on their Roku devices. Once a user has connected their accounts and linked their albums from Google Photos they can visit the Roku Photo Streams channel on their Roku device to set their screensaver. Roku OS 11.5
Roku OS 11.5, the latest automatic software update for Roku devices, makes streaming easier and more convenient than ever. Highlights include fresh features available in What to Watch, new entertainment discovery through the Roku Home Screen Menu, Bluetooth® private listening available on select devices, and more.
Roku OS 11.5 is rolling out to supported Roku streaming players and Roku TV™ models over the coming months. A list of key features and updates, as well as supported Roku devices, is included below.
New Features Available in What to Watch (US) - As part of our previous software release, Roku OS 11, we introduced What to Watch as a single destination to browse movies and TV shows, recommendations based on popular and trending titles, and a tailored selection of entertainment centered around users' most watched genres. With the release of Roku OS 11.5, we're enhancing the What to Watch experience with two updates to help users quickly find and start streaming the entertainment they love.
- Continue Watching - Users will now see a "Continue Watching" row within What to Watch, making it quick and easy to resume watching movies and TV shows they were previously streaming. Continue Watching is a simple way for users to access a single destination to jump right back into entertainment across a variety of streaming channels. The Continue Watching row will enable users to pick up where they left off with partners like Netflix, HBO Max, Paramount+, and The Roku Channel, with more to come.
Save List (US) - Users will be able to create a single, easy-to-access Save List of entertainment from across the Roku platform. A new "Save" option will now appear on movie and TV show details pages, allowing users to save that title to stream later with a simple press of a button. Once users save their first movie or TV show, a new Save List row will appear within What to Watch, giving them a convenient way to access saved entertainment and to add or remove titles in their list.
Because users often receive recommendations for movies or TV shows while having dinner with friends or at the office, the Save List is seamlessly integrated with the Roku mobile app as well. Users will be able to add a movie or TV show to their list from anywhere and have it waiting in their Save List on their Roku devices when they're back home.
- Note: Save List is also available to users in Canada, Ireland, and the UK, and will appear as an item within the Home Screen Menu. Users in these countries can create their Save List with similar ease as those in the US with a convenient "Save" option on the title's details page, as well as managing and adding to their list from anywhere with the Roku mobile app.
Updates to Live TV - With over 300+ free live TV streaming channels, Roku's live TV experience is more robust than ever. With OS 11.5, discovering and streaming free live TV will be even easier and more personalized, with updates to our Live TV Channel Guide and the Roku mobile app.
- Categories - The Live TV Channel Guide will now include the option to view channels by categories, helping users get to the live entertainment they're looking for even faster. New categories like Recents, Favorites, and Subscribed (for users who have a Premium Subscriptions within The Roku Channel) make it simple to jump straight to the channels they enjoy. The Channel Guide also includes a selection of genres including News, Sports, Movies, Entertainment, Kids, Crime, Music, and En Español, all of which will be automatically updated based on the free live TV channels available. To access categories with the Live TV Channel Guide, users will simply press the left arrow on their Roku remote when they're viewing the program guide.
Easy Access to Live TV via the Roku Mobile App - The Roku mobile app will now provide quick access to the Live TV Channel Guide via a "Guide" button on the app's remote screen. When users press the Guide button, the Live TV Channel Guide will appear on the screen of the Roku TV that is connected to the mobile app. They can then use the app remote to watch free live TV channels, browse the program guide, and quickly find channels that match their interests.
- Note: The Guide button within the Roku mobile app will only be available when connected to a Roku TV with OS 11.5. This feature will be available in the US, CA, and MX.
Entertainment Discovery - Roku Search is designed to help users quickly find the entertainment they want to watch on the channel of their choice. With OS 11.5, we're making this experience more visual so it's easier for users to view search results and find exactly what they're looking to stream next.
- Visual Search Results - When users perform a search from their Roku Home Screen Menu, they will experience a more visual and convenient way to browse movies and TV shows with rows of artwork for relevant titles. These rows are organized in categories such as TV and Movies, Roku Zones, Channels, Cast and Crew, and more. Also, while typing in a search query, Roku will include suggested queries to make searching faster and more convenient.
Updates to Movie & TV Show Details Page - With OS 11 we announced improvements to movie and TV show details pages within the Roku mobile app. With OS 11.5, those same enhancements will come to the big screen. When users land on the details page for a movie or TV show following a search, they will see a new page designed to make it easy to view more information, including where it's available to stream—with results organized by channels streaming it for free, premium services the user is subscribed to, and other options for viewing. Images of the cast and crew will also be included on the page, in addition to the Save button to add it to the Save List.
Introducing The Buzz and the Roku Store to the Roku Home Screen Menu - The Roku Home Screen Menu provides quick and easy access to search and entertainment discovery with just a few clicks. With OS 11.5 users now have two new destinations to explore all that Roku has to offer.
- The Buzz (US) - The Buzz is a new destination on the Roku Home Screen Menu that gives users a quick, engaging way to discover entertainment. When users enter The Buzz from their home screen, they can browse a frequently updated, personalized collection of posts from a selection of top streaming channels, as well as other popular entertainment and media brands. These posts include video clips, trailers, behind-the-scenes footage, images, and other short-form content to help users discover movies and TV they may want to stream. Users can engage with a post by liking it to see similar posts in the future, following the channel or brand that created the post, and more. Most importantly, if users see a post featuring a movie or TV show that captures their interest, they can immediately stream it with just a few clicks of the remote.
At launch, The Buzz will feature posts from a select group of streaming channels and entertainment brands, with more expected to come soon.
Roku Store - The new Roku Store experience on the Home Screen Menu is the destination for users to browse, search, and add free and paid channels to their devices. Users will have a visual and immersive experience within the store where they can navigate through different categories to easily find and shop for new streaming entertainment.
New Visuals When Searching with Roku Voice - With thousands of streaming channels—including 300+ free live TV options—available on Roku devices, there are more ways to discover and watch entertainment than ever before. New on-screen visuals in Roku OS 11.5 makes it easy for users to find exactly what they’re looking for when searching with Roku Voice. In scenarios where there are multiple channel offerings for a voice search, a display will appear at the bottom of the screen with relevant options that make it easy for users to see and select their intended channel.
Bluetooth Private Listening on Select Devices - Roku Ultra, Roku® Streambar®, Roku® Streambar® Pro, Roku Smart Soundbar, and onn.™• Roku Smart Soundbar owners will be able to connect their favorite wireless Bluetooth headphones directly to their device for easy access to private listening. Once paired, wireless headphones can be easily connected or disconnected in the Options menu, or set to connect automatically.
- Note: Bluetooth private listening will be available on Roku Ultra (4800X, 4801X, 4802X), Roku® Streambar®(9102R), Roku® Streambar® Pro (9101R2), Roku Smart Soundbar (9101R), and onn.™• Roku Smart Soundbar (9100X) devices.
For Roku devices without Bluetooth, private listening is still available with wireless headphones via the Roku mobile app and with wired headphones on supported Roku remotes.
Audio/Video (A/V) Sync for Roku TV™ - Roku TV owners who have connected audio devices (soundbars and AVRs) will now be able to improve audio/video (A/V) synchronization when required for seamless streaming. This simple calibration tool is available to use within the Roku mobile app under the Settings menu when controlling a Roku TV.
Automatic Input Naming for Roku TV™ - Roku TV owners will experience an easier way to identify the devices plugged into their HDMI ports. When a user connects a Blu-Ray player, set-top box, or gaming console to their Roku TV, Roku will automatically identify the device and name the input tile according to the model. This will enable users to easily identify which input they would like to access with ease. Roku TV owners can also assign names to Roku TV inputs for additional customization through the Settings menu.

Roku OS 10 is rolling out to supported Roku streaming players over the coming weeks. Roku TV™ models are expected to receive the automatic software update by early May. A list of key features and updates, as well as supported Roku devices, is included below.
Key Roku OS 10 features:
Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit - First introduced on select 4K Roku devices in Roku OS 9.4, Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit are now available on even more Roku devices. With AirPlay 2, Roku users can effortlessly stream, control, and share their favorite videos and photos directly from their iPhone, iPad, or Mac to compatible Roku devices, bringing the experience to the big screen. Users simply need to tap the AirPlay icon in their favorite apps and select their Roku device. They can pause, fast forward, and rewind using the controls on their iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
AirPlay 2 also allows Roku users to send music and podcasts from their Apple devices to compatible Roku TVs and streaming players. Users can tap the AirPlay icon in their apps, on the Lock screen, or in Control Center to send audio to their Roku device. If they have more than one Roku device, or other AirPlay 2-enabled products in their home, they can play music on multiple devices at once, all in sync, or play different songs in different rooms.
AirPlay 2 makes it easy and effortless for Roku users to mirror the display of their iPhone, iPad, or Mac on their TV screen no wires or adapters required. Users can simply press the Screen Mirroring button in Control Center on their iPhone and iPad, or the AirPlay icon in the Menu bar of their Mac to share presentations, websites, and more right on the big screen.
Compatible Roku devices also support HomeKit, which allows users to easily and securely control Roku devices using the Home app or by asking Siri on their Apple devices.
- Note: Most Roku devices will support Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit with the exception of Roku TV model numbers beginning with "6" (6XXXX), "5" (5XXXX), and Roku player model numbers 2700X, 2710X, 2720X, 3500X, 3700X, 3710X, and 4400X. Performance of the Live TV Channel Guide has also been improved to give users even smoother channel surfing across the free, live streaming channels available in the Live TV Channel Guide.

When a supported game console is connected to an HDMI® port on a Roku TV, the input tile on the user's Roku home screen will automatically change to the game console icon for easy identification so users can jump right into gaming. Additionally, the Roku TV detects the capabilities of the game console and automatically enables settings like Game Mode which offers the lowest latency picture for a more responsive display and optimal gaming experience. In addition to Game Mode, select Roku TV models will automatically enable advanced features to enhance usability and picture quality for game consoles connected via HDMI. Based on the Roku TV model being used, these settings may include HDR gaming, Auto Low-Latency Mode, Variable Refresh Rate, High Frame Rate, and THX Certified Game Mode.
Visit the Roku support site for more information regarding Roku TV settings for gaming.
HDR10+ - HDR10+ is now available on Roku Ultra, Roku Express 4K, and Roku Express 4K+. HDR10+ enables dynamic metadata that continuously enhances display settings, so users see the most vivid and brilliant colors throughout the HDR10+ content streaming experience. Roku devices will automatically detect HDR10+ TV compatibility during setup and users can configure the Display type within the Settings menu.
- Note: HDR10+ is available on Roku Ultra (480XX) and Roku Express 4K/4K+ (394XX) models and must be paired with an HDR10+ compatible TV. At launch HDR10+ content will be available from select channel partners, with additional supported content and channels to be added over time.
Automatic Wi-Fi® Network Detection – A growing number of homes have wireless networks with multiple bands, for example 5GHz or 2.4GHz, and choosing the best network or band for a device can be confusing. The new automatic network detection feature notifies Roku users of the optimal wireless network to connect to in their homes so they can enjoy the best possible streaming experience. Roku devices will recommend the optimal wireless network during connection setup and when running a network scan from the Settings menu, to help users choose the best network for their Roku device. Additionally, when there is a better network connection available in the user's home, the Roku device will proactively display a prompt recommending that the user connect to that network for the best streaming experience.
Instant Resume - Select streaming channels now support instant resume, a feature that helps users get back to the content they were watching within these supported channels faster. When launching a supported channel from the Roku home screen, users will now be taken directly to the place within the channel they left off so they can resume from that same point within the channel. Instant resume is currently supported on 15+ channels including The Roku Channel, Starz, and Plex, and will be available from additional channels over time.
Improvements to visual search results for Roku Voice - Users who initiate a voice search while within a streaming channel can now experience a more visual and convenient way to browse Roku Search results without disrupting their viewing experience. Results will be displayed in a partial overlay with content from the active channel in the first row, followed by rows of other matches from elsewhere on the platform, providing users with the full breadth of results to choose from, ordered by the best possible match.

Roku OS 9.3
Roku OS 9.3, a free, automatic software update for Roku devices, introduces a variety of new features, updates, and performance improvements for Roku users to enjoy. Highlights of Roku OS 9.3 include support for Spanish language commands when using Roku Voice, Works with Alexa and Works with Google Assistant support in additional countries, new ways to personalize the Roku Home Screen and more.
Roku OS 9.3 is available on select Roku players starting today and is expected to roll out to all supported streaming players in the coming weeks. Roku TV™ models are expected to receive the automatic software update this summer. A list of key features and updates, as well as supported Roku devices, is included below.
Key Roku OS 9.3 features:
Updates to Roku Voice – Roku Voice makes it easy for users to find their favorite entertainment and control their Roku streaming experience with a variety of simple voice commands. It's been developed with a specific focus on entertainment and adding ease and convenience to users' interactions with features and functionality of the Roku platform. Roku OS 9.3 continues the evolution of Roku Voice and its capabilities with a number of new features:
- Spanish Language Support (U.S. and Mexico) – Roku Voice is available to Roku users in Mexico for the first time with the addition of Spanish language voice commands. Users in the U.S. can also choose to speak their commands in Spanish when using Roku Voice. To enable this feature, users must set the language on their Roku device to Spanish from within the Settings menu. Once the Roku device’s language is set to Spanish, users simply press and hold the microphone button on their Roku remote (if compatible) or tap the icon from within the free Roku mobile app to speak the full range of supported Roku Voice commands. Roku Voice allows users to quickly find their favorite entertainment by searching for titles, actors, or genres, as well as control media playback on their Roku device, launch channels and more.
- Note: If a user has their Roku device’s language set to Spanish, they must speak commands in Spanish when using Roku Voice within the Roku mobile app, even if their mobile device is set to another language.
- Visual Search Results for Roku Voice (U.S. only) – When using Roku Voice to search for movies, shows or popular genres, users will now see a more visual, easy to browse display of movie and TV show artwork rather than a text-based list of options. This new search results screen orders the results in categorized rows that include relevant movies, shows, short-form content and more for simple navigation and quick discovery of entertainment. Once a user selects the specific movie or show they want to watch, they'll see an unbiased list of channels that offer that title, ordered by price (including free when available), so they can choose the viewing option that's best for them.
- Updates to Roku Voice in International Regions – Roku OS 9.3 introduces updates to Roku Voice in Canada, Ireland and the U.K. that give users new ways to find entertainment such as searching by a selection of popular movie quotes, and the ability to speak more natural phrases like "show me..." or "I want to watch..." when speaking voice commands. It also introduces a greater variety of supported voice commands for media playback such as "fast forward" or "pause," and device control such as "turn on closed captions."
- Support for News Related Commands (U.S. only) – Roku Voice users can now say “show me the news” and be directed to a Roku Zone filled with a variety of available news channels, or "play the news" to jump right into a live stream of ABC News within The Roku Channel. If a user says “play the news on [CHANNEL]," they will be directed to that specific news channel and this preference will be remembered so that any future command of “play the news” will launch their preferred news channel for a more personalized experience.
- New Voice Help and Tips – To help users learn more about the capabilities of Roku Voice, Roku OS 9.3 introduces the ability for users to quickly tap the microphone button on the Roku remote (if compatible) and be presented with on-screen tips for a variety of commands they can try when using Roku Voice.
- More Channels for Direct Playback – In the U.S., more than 50 top channels now support the direct playback feature of Roku Voice. Initially launched as part of Roku OS 9.1, direct playback helps customers get to entertainment more quickly when using Roku Voice to search for entertainment by directly playing the show or movie when possible, rather than displaying a search results screen. Playback will occur in most instances when the movie or show is available on one of the 50+ supported channels if the user has the channel installed, as well as when users specifically indicate the channel name in their voice command. If direct playback from a voice command is not available for a movie or show, users will continue to see unbiased search results ordered by price so they can choose the best viewing option for their needs.
More information on Roku Voice and supported commands is available on the Roku support site.
Works with Alexa and Works with Google Assistant in More Countries – Roku users in Canada, Mexico and the U.K. can control their Roku players and Roku TVs by speaking commands to Alexa-enabled and/or Google Assistant-enabled devices they already have in their homes. Users simply need to find and link the Roku Alexa skill and/or Google Assistant action in their respective mobile apps in order to control their Roku devices by speaking commands such as, “Alexa, launch [CHANNEL] on Roku,” or “OK Google, pause on living room Roku.” Roku TV owners can also say things like “Alexa, turn off Roku” or "hey Google, switch to HDMI 2 on living room Roku."
Visit the Roku support site for more information on Roku’s Alexa skill and Google Assistant action.
More Home Screen Personalization Options – Roku OS 9.3 makes it easier for users to give their Home Screen a personal touch. A variety of Home Screen wallpapers, as well as screensavers, are now accessible from a single “Theme” menu item located within Settings. When users select “Theme” from the menu, they will see a selection of available options to change the appearance of their device's Home Screen wallpaper and/or screensaver.
Users in the U.S. can select the available wallpapers and screensavers from a more visual, browsable view with categories such as Featured, Most Popular and more. They also have access to Theme packs, a new way for users to customize their experience, that include a matching Home Screen wallpaper and screensaver. Theme packs available at launch include Jungle, Western, Movie Magic and more. For even greater customization options, users can mix and match Home Screen wallpapers and screensavers.
Roku users in all regions also have greater control over the tiles that appear in the Shortcut section of their Home Screen. Shortcut tiles can be hidden or moved to another position within the Shortcut section by pressing the “*” key on the Roku remote and selecting the “Hide shortcut” or "Move shortcut" option. If a user chooses to hide all Shortcut tiles, the entire Shortcut section will be hidden from the Home Screen. To add/unhide Shortcut tiles, users can go to Settings > Home Screen > Shortcuts and select the specific Shortcut tiles they want to appear on their Home Screen.
- Note: Both the “Themes” and “Screensavers” categories have been removed from the Roku Channel Store. Users now have a single method to add/change their Home Screen wallpapers and screensavers by going to Settings > Theme.
Performance Improvements – A variety of updates have been made in Roku OS 9.3 to improve performance across supported Roku devices. After the Roku device receives the software update, users will experience a reduction in device boot times, faster launch times for a select number of channels (with more supported channels coming soon), a more responsive Home Screen and faster navigation when using features such as Featured Free. Roku users with older Roku TV models and streaming players will likely see the greatest improvements to their device's performance with this update.
A New Interface for Roku Media Player – The Roku Media Player channel’s interface has been updated with a new design that aligns more closely with the broader Roku user interface, including larger visuals and a new display when playing music files for viewing track information and album artwork (if available). The redesigned Roku Media Player channel makes it simple for users to find and play media files, including video, music and photos, when using their Roku device’s USB port (if available) or by accessing a media server on their local network.
Enhanced experience when using a Roku Smart Soundbar on a Roku TV – Roku TV users who've connected a Roku Smart Soundbar to their TV can now access more of their soundbar settings directly from the Roku TV interface, eliminating the need to switch back and forth between menus or use multiple remotes. With Roku OS 9.3, users can pair an external device such as a mobile phone to the Roku Smart Soundbar for Bluetooth® audio playback by simply accessing the TV's Settings menu. In addition, the TV’s Settings menu can be used to pair other Roku audio products to the soundbar, such as the Roku Wireless Subwoofer and Roku TV Wireless Speakers for full surround sound. These updates build upon a previous software release that automated setup of the Roku Smart Soundbar when connected to a Roku TV and made the soundbar’s sound settings accessible via the TV’s interface.
Additionally, the input tile for the Roku Smart Soundbar can now be hidden/unhidden from the user’s Roku TV Home Screen based on their streaming preference. Users can choose to hide the input tile if they prefer to use the Roku TV for streaming by going to Settings > TV inputs > Soundbar > Show/hide tile. If the user prefers to use the built-in streaming capabilities of their Roku Smart Soundbar, they can unhide the input tile from within the same Settings menu.
- Note: The Roku Smart Soundbar input tile is hidden on Roku TVs by default during initial setup.
A new look and features for the Roku Mobile App – A number of updates have been made to the free Roku mobile app in conjunction with Roku OS 9.3. Changes include a new navigation bar that remains in place at the top of the mobile screen when users are connected to a Roku device. This persistent navigation bar provides users with quick access to Roku Search, a dropdown menu of available devices so users can easily switch the device they want to control with their mobile app, and a shortcut to the remote screen.
The remote screen of the Roku mobile app has also been redesigned to include quick access icons so users can launch useful mobile app features without the need to exit the remote screen. For example, a quick access icon has been added that allows users to browse and launch their recently viewed channels directly from the remote screen. Users will also notice that the main navigation tabs at the bottom of the mobile app screen have been simplified to include icons for watching The Roku Channel on their mobile device, viewing their Roku device information, and access to their mobile app settings.
In addition, the search experience within the Roku Mobile App in the U.S. has been enhanced with the inclusion of genre-based Roku Zones on the search screen. When users visit the search screen, they can now browse a variety of Zones such as Action, Comedy, News and more within the app to quickly find a movie or show to watch. Once they tap on a specific Zone, they'll see a browsable selection of relevant movies and shows, organized into categories including new releases, free and more. Also, when users begin to type a search term, relevant results will now populate on the screen in a visual display with movie and/or show artwork rather than a text-based list of results.
The free Roku mobile app update is expected to be available to all users in the coming weeks.

Roku Zones Available on All Roku Devices (US only) – In the mood to watch an action movie or a comedy? Roku Zones make it easy to discover entertainment across a selection of top genres, as well as a variety of topical subjects, such as award winners. Initially introduced on a small number of Roku devices this past summer, Roku Zones are now available on all Roku devices supported by Roku OS 9.2.
Customers can use Roku Search to enter a variety of genres or topical subjects and receive a Roku Zone within their search results. When selected, the Zone provides them with a curated selection of relevant entertainment from channels across the Roku platform organized in browsable, categorized rows that may include new releases, titles that are free to watch, rentals and more Roku Zones, such as the Drama Movies & TV Zone or the Superhero Movies Zone, are frequently updated so customers can come back to them on a regular basis to browse a refreshed selection of entertainment to find something new to watch.
Easy Discovery of 4K Entertainment* (US only) – Showing friends and family the vivid, brilliant picture quality of 4K entertainment has never been easier. Roku OS 9.2 introduces new features that make it fast and simple for customers to find 4K Ultra HD movies and shows when using Roku devices that support 4K video playback.
Updated 4K Spotlight Channel - The 4K Spotlight Channel has been updated with a new look and simpler navigation to help customers find 4K entertainment quickly. Launching the channel will now take them to the 4K Movies & TV Zone, a regularly updated, hand-curated selection of 4K entertainment from channels across the Roku platform. Customers can browse a wide variety of 4K titles across a number of categories such as Most Popular, Action, and more to find the perfect movie or show to enjoy in beautiful 4K resolution.
4K in Roku Search - Roku OS 9.2 makes it easier to find 4K entertainment using Roku Search. Customers can now enter “4K” as a search term and see a result for the 4K Movies & TV Zone, which when clicked, allows them to browse a wide selection of available 4K entertainment. In addition, customers with voice remotes can say things like, “show me 4K movies,” and see results for a variety of available 4K movies.
- Note: In order to view movies and shows in 4K resolution, you must have a Roku device that supports 4K video playback, as well as an internet connection fast enough to support 4K video streaming.
Shortcut Section on the Home Screen (US, CA, FR, LatAm, UK) – A new shortcut section has been added to the Home Screen to reduce the number of steps needed to complete popular actions. At launch, Roku players will have a shortcut tile to add channels, and Roku TVs will have shortcut tiles to add channels and set a sleep timer. More shortcuts will be added over time to help customers perform specific actions more quickly, including a shortcut on Roku players that will turn off the power on compatible TV's so customers won’t have to pick up their TV remote. The shortcut section appears on the Home Screen below customers’ channel tiles. It can be quickly accessed by pressing the up arrow on the D-pad when at the top of the Home Screen.
Roku Tips & Tricks Channel(US only) – The new Roku Tips & Tricks channel helps customers get the most out of their Roku devices. The channel is installed on all Roku devices and is packed with videos created by Roku to help customers learn more about features, new products and popular support topics to help ensure they have the best possible streaming experience. The channel will automatically appear on customers’ Home Screens when their device updates to Roku OS 9.2, and can be moved or removed by pressing the Star button on the Roku remote. Customers can also access the Roku Tips & Tricks channel from within the “Help” section of the Settings menu on their Roku device, as well as add it from the Roku Channel Store if it was previously removed.
Control Multiple Roku Devices with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant (US only) – Customers who use voice-enabled devices featuring Amazon Alexa and/or Google Assistant to control their Roku device can now control multiple Roku devices. An update has been made to Roku’s Amazon Alexa skill, as well as Roku’s Google Assistant action, allowing customers to choose to control some or all of the Roku devices in their home. After linking their preferred Roku devices in the setup process, customers can simply say which device they want to control with voice commands, for example, “Alexa, pause living room Roku” or “hey Google, turn off bedroom Roku.”
Set Sleep Timers on Roku TVs with Roku Voice (US only) – Roku TV customers can now use Roku Voice to quickly set a sleep timer on their TV. To set a sleep timer, they simply need to press and hold the Roku Voice button on their Roku TV remote*, or on the remote in the free Roku mobile app, and speak a command such as, "turn off the TV in 20 minutes" or "go to sleep at 11 pm."
- Note: Not all Roku TVs come with remotes featuring a Roku Voice button. Customers who do not have a voice remote can use the Roku mobile app to control their Roku TV with voice commands, or purchase a Roku TV Voice Remote from the Roku Accessories store.

Customers can now use Roku Voice to find a movie by searching for the top quotes from thousands of popular movies across the Roku platform. They can use Roku Voice to speak a command such as, "What movie is this from - 'Here's looking at you kid'" and quickly see results for the movie(s) related to the quote.
Roku Voice Support for Roku Media Player Channel (US only) - Customers who use the Roku Media Player channel to play their personal music, movies and photos can now use Roku Voice to find and play their stored files by speaking a command such as, "play classic rock on Roku Media Player." Roku OS 9.1
Today we’re beginning to roll out Roku OS 9.1, an update to the Roku operating system that powers all Roku devices. This update includes enhancements to voice capabilities, Guest Mode, Automatic Account Link and other improvements to overall streaming performance across Roku devices.
Roku OS 9.1 will be available on select Roku streaming players starting today and is expected to roll out to all supported streaming players in the coming weeks. Roku TV™ models are expected to receive the update in early summer. A list of key Roku OS 9.1 features and updates, as well as supported Roku devices, is included below.
- Note: Some updates apply to specific Roku devices or regions. In those instances, additional information is included.
Key Roku OS 9.1 features:
Voice enhancements (US only) – To help customers get to entertainment more quickly when using voice search, movies and TV shows in The Roku Channel will now begin playback, rather than display a search results screen - including entertainment available via the 30+ Premium Subscription services available on The Roku Channel. Playback will occur in most instances when the movie or show is available in The Roku Channel, as well as when a customer specifically indicates the channel name in their voice command. If playback from a voice command is not available for a specific movie or show, customers will continue to see unbiased search results ordered by price so they can choose the best viewing option for them.
Additional channels are expected to support this functionality in the coming weeks. This feature works best when customers speak the entire title of the movie or show they want to watch along with the channel name.
UPDATE (5/6/19): As of May 6, 2019, more than 20 channels now support this feature. When using voice search, movies and TV shows in AHC GO, Animal Planet Go, Boomerang, Cartoon Network, Destination America GO, Discovery Life GO, Discovery GO, DIY Network, Food Network, HGTV, Hulu, Investigation Discovery GO, NBC, Science Channel GO, Spectrum TV, Starz, The Cooking Channel, The Roku Channel, TLC GO, Travel Channel, Tubi, and Velocity GO, will now begin playback in most instances, rather than display a search results screen. For optimal results, it’s best to include the name of the channel in the voice request, such as, "play The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu." Additional channels are expected to support this functionality in the coming months.
Roku OS 9.1 also introduces helpful voice commands including the ability to say "replay" to go back a few seconds while watching a movie or show, as well as quickly toggling closed captions on/off by simply saying "turn closed captions on." If a customer owns a Roku TV and has the Fast TV Start feature enabled, they can use a voice command to turn the TV display on or off while streaming select music channels including Pandora, iHeartRadio and TuneIn by using phrases like "turn display off."
Additional information about voice search and controls, as well as supported devices, can be found here.
Guest Mode (US, LATAM, UK, CA) – Auto Sign Out Mode, a feature introduced earlier this year, is now called Guest Mode. When enabled on a customer’s device, this mode allows visiting guests to sign in to subscription channels using their own account credentials. Guests can specify a date on which their credentials will be automatically removed from the Roku device. To enable Guest Mode, go to Settings > System > Guest Mode.
Roku OS 9.1 also introduces new capabilities for the Guest Mode feature. Customers can now turn Guest Mode on/off for specific Roku devices by scrolling to the ”My linked devices” section on their My account page on Roku.com. In addition, they can use their account page to remotely sign a guest out of a device if the guest left early or accidentally selected the incorrect sign-out date.
For more information on Guest Mode, please click here.
Updates to Roku Search (US only) – Customers can soon search for a subset of popular genres such as “comedy” or “action” when using text or voice search on select Roku devices. When customers click on a genre-based Roku Search result, they’ll see a browsable collection of movies and TV shows specific to that genre. This collection will be categorized so it’s easy to find free, on-demand, subscription, 4K and other types of content within that genre if applicable.
Roku Search results will also soon indicate when a movie or TV episode is available to stream in 4K. Customers will be able to quickly see if a title is available in 4K and/or HD and choose the streaming option that is best for them.
These new features are expected to be added to Roku Search in early summer and will be available on currently shipping Roku streaming players and 4K Roku TV models. Additional Roku devices are expected to be supported in a future OS release.
My Offers (US only) – Customers will see “My Offers” in the left navigation menu of the Roku home screen if they are eligible for special offers or discounts on Roku devices. If a customer sees My Offers on their home screen, they can select it to view all available offers and can choose to purchase a new Roku product with just a few clicks of their remote. If no offers are available, My Offers will not appear on the home screen.
Click here for more information on My Offers.
Automatic Account Link – It’s now easier for customers to set up their subscription channels when activating additional Roku devices on their Roku account. If a customer has already logged in to a supported subscription service on a Roku device, they will not be required to re-enter their username and password when launching the same channel on their newly activated Roku device.
Automatic Account Link is currently supported on nearly 10 subscription streaming services including Pandora and Sling TV, with additional services expected to be supported soon.
This feature is designed to make subscription streaming on multiple Roku devices easier for customers, similar to the existing Single Sign-On feature that reduces the number of times they need to enter a username and password for their cable or satellite provider in order to view “TV Everywhere” streaming channels on a Roku device.
Automatic Volume Leveling for Roku TV models – In order to ensure a reliable customer experience, the Automatic Volume Leveling feature mentioned in the Roku OS 9 release notes (see below) will now roll out to Roku TVs as part of Roku OS 9.1. This feature enables a uniform audio level across various types of content, so it will no longer feel jarring when a commercial comes on or when streaming channels are changed. It can be turned on/off within the Volume Mode setting that appears in the options menu after pressing the star button “*” on your Roku TV remote. This feature is already available on select Roku streaming players and Roku TVs that are paired with Roku TV Wireless Speakers.
Click here for more information on Automatic Volume Leveling and supported devices.

Just use your voice remote or the free Roku mobile app to speak commands such as “tune to NBC,” or “switch to HDMI 1” to control your Roku TV with ease.
In addition, our voice search feature for Roku streaming players and Roku TVs now includes natural language understanding to allow you to search for movies, shows, actors or directors, or even launch streaming channels, in a more conversational tone. For example, you can say things like “show me movies with Tom Hanks,” “launch Hulu,” or even more detailed searches such as “show me comedies with Will Ferrell.”
If your Roku streaming player or Roku TV did not come with a voice-enabled remote control, you can still use voice features by downloading the free Roku mobile app for iOS® or Android™.
For more details on voice search and controls, click here.

- Smart Guide for Roku TVs (US only) – When using an HDTV antenna to view free local broadcast channels on your Roku TV, you can now access a detailed electronic program guide to make it easy to find broadcast entertainment. Simply select the antenna input from your Roku TV home screen and Smart Guide will display past, current and upcoming broadcast TV in an easy-to-use program guide. Smart Guide provides program information from seven days in the past up to 14 days in the future. Over time, Smart Guide will even identify your favorite broadcast channels by placing your most viewed channels at the top of the program guide.
Smart Guide also includes our More Ways to Watch feature to provide you with additional viewing options. A More Ways to Watch prompt will appear on your screen if a movie or show listed in the program guide is also available to watch on-demand from popular streaming services, or if more episodes of a show are available to stream. And, just like Roku Search, we’ll show you when movies or shows can be streamed for free, or ranked by price with the lowest cost option first. More Ways to Watch will also provide recommendations for similar movies or shows you can stream on your Roku TV.
Click here for more information about Smart Guide, or here for information about More Ways to Watch.

Just enter your search term using the onscreen keyboard, or use your voice with a voice remote or the free Roku mobile app, and Roku Search shows you if the movie or show is currently available to watch on local broadcast TV via your HDTV antenna, or at any time in the next two weeks.
Click here to learn more about using an HDTV antenna with your Roku TV to access free local broadcast stations.

Key Roku OS 7.6 Features
- More Ways to Watch for Roku TVs (US only) – This feature provides an enhanced viewing experience based on what you watch on devices connected to your HD or Full HD Roku TV via HDMI inputs such as cable or satellite boxes, and/or connected over-the-air broadcast antennas. You’ll be required to enable the feature via an opt-in prompt on your Roku TV once the feature is available or when setting up a new Roku TV. More Ways to Watch can recognize the show or movie you’re watching on these boxes and antennas using Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) technology and suggest additional viewing options via streaming to enhance your experience. Additional viewing options may include the ability to watch from the beginning, watch more episodes of the same show and/or view suggestions for similar entertainment available to stream.
For details about different viewing options, learn how to use More Ways to Watch on your Roku TV.
More Ways to Watch can be turned on or off at any time in the Roku TV settings menu. If you choose to turn off More Ways to Watch after it was first enabled, viewing information collected prior to the feature being turned off will not be deleted.
- Note: More Ways to Watch will be available for existing 4K Roku TV models in the next few months.
- Closed caption on replay for Roku TVs – Roku OS 7.6 helps make sure you never miss what was said by expanding our closed caption on replay feature to include Live TV Pause on Roku TVs. When this setting is enabled, simply press the replay or left button on your Roku remote to go back a few moments in the movie or show you’re watching to view closed captions, if available, for dialog you may have missed. Closed captions will appear on the screen until you reach the original point you were watching in the movie or show. You can turn this feature on or off within the Closed Caption settings menu. Additionally, when the setting is enabled on your Roku TV or Roku player, closed captions will now appear on the screen while content is paused.
- Updates to Live TV Pause for Roku TVs – When using the Live TV Pause feature on your Roku TV, you’ll now see thumbnail images displayed on the screen while pausing, rewinding, or fast forwarding to make it easier to identify where you are in the movie or show to resume playing at the moment you want to watch.
- Favorite channels list for Roku TV tuner – You can now create a list of your favorite broadcast channels when you have a broadcast antenna connected to your Roku TV. To create your own favorite channels list, simply press the left button when watching over-the-air television on your Roku TV to bring up the list of available channels. Press the Star button on your Roku TV remote to add individual channels to your favorites list. Once created, the favorites list will allow you to browse only the tuner channels you’ve added to that list. You can switch back to the all-channels list to view all available tuner channels at any time.
