Why can I not control my TV after installing my Roku Streambar or smart soundbar?
When you install your Roku® Streambar®, Roku Streambar, Roku Streambar Pro, or Roku Smart Soundbar, it should be centered with the television screen to best anchor the sound to the picture. Whether you simply place your Streambar or soundbar on a piece of furniture in front of your TV, or mount it to the wall or directly to the TV (or bracket), be careful not to block the infrared (IR) receiver on the front of your TV. If the IR receiver is blocked, even partially, it can affect how well you are able to control your TV.
This article will help you fix the problem if you can no longer control your TV after installing your Streambar or soundbar.
What is an IR receiver?
Your TV remote uses invisible infrared (IR) light to send the signal a short distance from the remote (where an IR transmitter is located) to the front of your TV (where an IR receiver is located). IR receivers are commonly located along the bottom edge of the screen on your TV and are typically part of the bezel. With some models, the IR receiver is offset from the bezel, and may have a shiny surface. Some IR receivers even emit a light when the IR signal is received. If you cannot locate the IR receiver on your TV, refer to the manufacturer's online documentation, or contact them directly.
How do I fix the problem?
To operate reliably, your TV remote must be pointed directly at your TV (and the IR receiver) and there must be nothing that can block the signal. Try moving your Streambar or soundbar, or your TV to a location where the IR receiver is not blocked. Sometimes moving a device only a few inches is enough to correct the behavior.
- Pro tip: If you cannot easily move your Streambar or soundbar, or your TV, you may be able to install an IR repeater system (or kit). This type of system includes three components - an IR receiver you typically attach somewhere on your TV (where it will not be blocked), a main hub or "brain" unit that the IR receiver connects to, and an IR transmitter that relays the signal to the blocked IR receiver built into your TV. You can purchase an IR repeater system from an online retailer, or your local electronics store. This suggestion is provided if you are comfortable working with audio/video equipment.
